Lassla of Prague, once lord of Mauthausen, had his castle built on a rocky island in the Danube in 1492. To protect it from flood damage, a pentagonal ground plan was chosen, with the fifth corner orientated westwards against the current like the bow of a ship.
There were originally small turrets at the five corners of the roof and access to the castle was only possible via a drawbridge.
The side arm that separated the castle from the mainland became increasingly silted up and was filled in around 1850.
